How to Stop the Habit of Nail Biting
Nail biting is one of those habits that are just not very easy to quit. Most people who have a nail biting problem are sick and tired of having bleeding fingers, stubby nails, and they would like to have beautiful nails at the end of their fingers. Although it is not easy, but there are ways to stop nail biting. Here are some things that you can do to help yourself.
First of all you have to do try and visualize your nails as being very healthy. Take a camera and photograph the nails on each hand when they have been bitten down to the quick. Next, take a sheet of paper and write down exactly what your nails make you think of, what they look like you, how you think they look like to others, and exactly how you would like your nails to look.
It said that when you try to stop nail biting, you should choose one nail to look after at a time. This means that even though you are continuing to bite your nails, you will have one nail on one of your hands which is going to remain unbitten. This nail is going to be under your protection. After you have grown this one nail to a beautiful length, choose another nail to start protecting, then another one. Do this until all your fingernails are beautiful, by the end of this you should no longer have a nail biting problem.
Many people bite their nails because they are under stress. One other way to stop nail biting is to find something else for your hands to do when you are under stress or any other time when you find that biting your nails is a problem. Some people find that chewing gum helps them, or drumming their fingers on the table top. Many people find that using a stress ball helps, you would squeeze this every time you feel stressful. Or you can try drawing, writing, or some other activity that requires the use of your hands. Try anything that is going to help you to stop biting nails.
Some other good methods to help you stop nail biting is to have a regular manicure or either use nail polish or try one of the paint on polishes which has a bitter taste. Every time you try and bite your nails you will taste the bitterness and be reminded that it’s time to quit nail biting. Another method which some people use it is to tape adhesive plasters around the ends of your fingers or wear rubber gloves when you feel stressed out.
Try to keep a diary of your nail biting episodes. This will help you to isolate the times when you are biting your nails the most. You can even attend some stress management courses where you can learn certain techniques to help you stop nail biting. Keep an eye on any young children who are biting their nails, sometimes this can mean that they are under stress at school.
