Most of the time, when a nail biter puts their fingernail inside the mouth to begin their bout of chewing, it is an unconscious decision. The prevention approach to nail biting has a lot to do with reminding you that you are trying to defeat this habit, it is giving your brain a nudge and saying “remember, you’re not supposed to be doing this”.

Although there are not too many adult nail biters, most people get out of the habit by the time they reach their late teens or early adult years, the best way to stop nail biting for an adult is by using the psychological method. This is because adults are much more capable of beating the habit by using common sense. One method which tends to work well with adults is to allow one nail to grow at a time. This nail is essentially being protected by you and cannot be bitten at any expense. Once the nail has been allowed to grow, you move on to the second nail, and then the third nail, and eventually you will have no more nail biting problems. With younger people, the prevention methods are probably the best ways to stop nail biting. These methods can include using a nail biting prevention polish which conditions the child into not biting their nails because of the foul taste.
